Estrone Descriptions:

Estrone is considered a weaker form of estrogen. It is typically produced by special belly fat cells, and is the major estrogenic form found in naturally-menopausal women who are not taking HRT. It is not directly active in as many tissues was estradiol is, but can be readily converted by to estradiol for actual use. Because of this, it is considered by biochemists to more properly be thought of as an estradiol precursor (although the conversion can go both ways, meaning that estrone can also be considered a breakdown or even a storage form of estrogen). It is sometimes considered "safer" than estradiol by virtue of its weakness, but since larger quantities are required to get the same effects as a smaller quantity of estradiol as well as the fact that it is normally converted to estradiol when that form is needed, other sources consider it no more or less safe than estradiol.

Estrone, a synthetically prepared or naturally occurring steroidal estrogen obtained from pregnant equine urine, is the primary circulating estrogen after menopause. Estrone is naturally derived from the peripheral conversion of androstenedione by an aromatase enzyme found in adipose tissues and is converted to estradiol in peripheral tissues. The estrogenic potency of estrone is one third that of estradiol. Estropipate is piperazine-stabilized estrone sulfate. Estrone, and estropipate are used to treat abnormalities related to gonadotropin hormone dysfunction, vasomotor symptoms, atrophic vaginitis, and vulvar atrophy associated with menopause, and for the prevention of osteoporosis due to estrogen deficiency.

Estrone was isolated from pomegranate seeds and its identity was confirmed by thin-layer chromatography in three solvent systems and by four color reactions. Three derivatives were prepared and had the same chromatographic characteristics in three solvent systems as the corresponding derivatives from authentic estrone. The biological potency of this material was also comparable to that of estrone. Pomegranate seeds are the richest plant source of steroidal estrogens yet found.

Estrone Effects:

Estrone (E1, and also oestrone) is an estrogenic hormone secreted by the ovary as well as adipose tissue with the chemical name of 3-hydroxyestra-1,3,5(10)-triene-17-one and the chemical formula C18H22O2. Estrone is an odorless, solid crystalline powder, white in color
with a melting point of 254.5 °C and a specific gravity of 1.23. Estrone is one of several natural estrogens, which also include estriol and estradiol. Estrone is the least abundant of the three hormones;estradiol is present almost always in the reproductive female body, and estriol is abundant primarily duringpregnancy.
Estrone is known to be a carcinogen for human females as well as cause breast tenderness or pain, nausea, headache, hypertension, and leg cramps. In men, estrone has been known to cause anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and erectile dysfunction.Estrone is relevant to health and disease states because of its conversion to estrone sulfate, a long-lived derivative. Estrone sulfate acts as a reservoir that can be converted as needed to the more active estradiol. It is the predominant estrogen in postmenopausal women.
